Enjoyable day spent inside Rolling Out cafe.
Friendly staff.
Great food.

OK, I was looking for a brunch spot in the outer sunset/parkside area on Saturday morning and I found 5 places with 4 1/2 stars.
- Andytown on Lawton St had a line out the door and about 10-12 people waiting outside. Too much wait time for a breakfast sandwich and mocha!
- Devil's Teeth on Noriega - same.
- Yonkers across the street - missed them because I was looking at Devil's Teeth.
- Rolling Out on Taraval had no line, so I gave them a try. I am thrilled that I did.
- Lou's on Taraval was going to be my last stop if I hadn't settled on Rolling Out. (Next time, Lou.)
I asked the guy at the counter what their best breakfast sandwich is. He recommended the "Pick 4" which is their sandwich with everything: egg, bacon, cheese, tomato, and greens. Yeah, those things were good, but the difference is that they put this stuff on two thick slices of homemade bread! And the large mocha was as good as anyplace else. It added up to a very nice brunch.
The place wasn't raucous noisy and I could enjoy my food. When I finished the brunch, I had to get some pastries to go. Now, some of the croissants and things look overdone, compared to what you find at the places that sell Sysco pastries. But when you taste the chocolate caramel croissant, for example, it is just the right amount of crispiness. It is wonderful. The Hawaiian Roll is a cinnamon roll with pineapple and coconut -- also fantastic. I also had a sausage frittata which actually had a flavorful sausage in it. I liked that too.
This is the kind of place that requires multiple visits in order to sample a variety of their goodies. I just hope that the crowds over at Andytown and Devil's Teeth don't find out that this place is just as good and there's no line. -

The Hawaiian sticky roll is more like a cinnamon bun versus a sticky bun. It's soft and doughy versus dense and sticky. You really taste the tropical flavor and pick up mostly pineapple, less cinnamon. Not as sweet as you'd expect. Priced nicely at $3.50 a piece. They have a lot of unique pastries at Rolling Out!

Hmmmmm, all the rave reviews..I was expecting a scene...But as we got there on a Saturday around 11am (prime brunch-y hour), The place was empty. Literally only 1 gal in front of us ordering 2 breakfast sandwiches to go.
hmmm, the display of pastries was (sorta) plentiful. Maybe I am spoiled, as I live a block away from B. Patisserie and used to live a block from Boulangerie back in the Pascal Rigo days.
Maybe it was the lighting, and just the general malaise of the place (kinda run down). But hey... 4.5 Yelp stars is 4.5 stars, and who an I to scoff?
We ordered a bacon maple pastry and a 4-way breakfast sandwich to eat in.
The sandwich took a few mins and when it arrived it was large, the bread was thick, the cheese was all melty and the eggs were fluffy. Two quibbles, the bread was cold (though no doubt home-made) and it was difficult to eat/falling apart. BUT DELICIOUS.
I had to remind them about the bacon maple thing -- they brought it right over and the caramel bottom was great! would have been better if it had been slightly warmed.
I needed something else, so we got a Portuguese egg tart ($1.30) which might have been the best part of the meal.
